THE KING OF MUSCLES

What is this gluteus maximus we’re talking about anyway? Sounds like the name of a historical ruler. That’s true in the broadest sense, because it’s also called the king of muscles. Gluteus Maximus is Latin for “largest gluteal muscle”. In terms of volume, it is the largest muscle in humans and the second most powerful after the masseter muscle. But while you can win a marathon without a masseter muscle, you can’t stand or walk without your gluteus. It is the elementary muscle for your athletic performance. So you better not neglect your gluteus 😉 

The gluteus is part of the so-called posterior chain, which has a great influence on the success of athletes in sprinting and jumping sports. It is involved in about 80% of jumping power and sprinting speed. The gluteus alone accounts for half of this strength. This makes its performance important for just about every athlete. By comparison, the quadriceps is only 5% involved in jumping power and sprinting speed.
